Indonesia Faces Renewed Outrage After Lawmakers Recess Allowance Nearly Doubled
Indonesian lawmakers have sparked fresh public fury by increasing their recess allowance from 400 million rupiah to 700 million rupiah per break, a rise taking effect October 3 despite earlier promises to cut privileges. The “recess allowance,” intended to fund work in electoral districts during parliamentary downtime, applies to the country’s 580 lawmakers, who take about five breaks a year. Critics argue the increase erodes credibility after national protests that erupted over excessive perks and inequality. The allowance hike approved by the Finance Ministry in May reignited accusations that lawmakers are out of touch with citizens struggling under rising inflation and economic hardship.
Earlier in August, tens of thousands of students, activists, and ordinary citizens protested in dozens of provinces over lavish parliamentary perks, including a 50 million rupiah monthly housing allowance granted to lawmakers—an amount many saw as insensitive in a time of surging living costs. Clashes between protesters and riot police in Jakarta resulted in road blockages, use of tear gas, and at least ten deaths. Following the unrest, the government promised reforms: some allowances were cut, and overseas travel for legislators was suspended. Many Indonesians welcomed those moves as necessary, but the recent allowance increase has been widely perceived as a backtrack, renewing demands for greater transparency and restraint among the political class.
Lawmakers and proponents of the adjustment defended the decision by citing rising costs of living and logistical demands of doing constituency work during recess. Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad insisted that the change was not a new benefit but an update reflecting inflation and operational realities. Civil society groups and watchdogs, however, condemned the action as a betrayal of public trust, pointing out that while some benefits were nominally reduced, the net effect may be that lawmakers’ overall compensation has increased when all perks are taken into account.
