Shopify Faces Widespread Global Outage Affecting Merchant Logins

The massive global e-commerce platform Shopify is experiencing a widespread technical outage, critically affecting merchant operations on Cyber Monday, one of the busiest and most crucial shopping days of the entire year. Reports of problems first surged at approximately 9:08 AM Eastern Time, or 2:08 PM Greenwich Mean Time, on Monday, December 1, 2025, with thousands of users across the United States, Europe, and other global regions flocking to service tracking websites to report issues. The outage primarily appears to be a major login failure, preventing store administrators from accessing their crucial merchant dashboards, point-of-sale systems, and mobile applications.

Shopify officially acknowledged the severe disruption on its status page, initially logging the problem as “some merchants encountering error messages when trying to login.” As the crisis intensified during the peak shopping hours, the status was upgraded to reflect “degraded performance” across essential functions, including the administrative dashboard, Point of Sale system, and API and mobile services. The timing of the failure is catastrophic for retailers, large and small, who rely on the platform to process orders, fulfill sales, and manage promotions during the final major sales window of the Black Friday and Cyber Monday period.

While the precise technical cause of the outage has not been officially revealed by the company, platform stability issues during major traffic surges like Cyber Monday are a known risk for any global e-commerce platform, despite Shopify’s extensive preparations for the event. In an advisory posted around 10:26 AM Eastern Time, the company urged merchants who were already successfully logged into their administrative accounts to “remain logged in” on those devices to avoid the login complications plaguing others. Analysts warn that even a short duration of downtime during a key sales event can translate into the loss of hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue for the platform’s global base of merchants. The company stated it is actively investigating the root cause and “working to resolve” the issue, but no immediate timeline for a full fix has been provided.
