Former president promotes direct talks amid international backlash
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has launched a high-stakes diplomatic initiative aimed at brokering peace in Ukraine, engaging both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. His special envoy, Steve Witkoff, traveled to Moscow on August 6, 2025, and held a nearly three-hour meeting with President Putin. The meeting was described by both sides as highly productive and constructive, although no formal agreement was reached. Russia reportedly showed openness to a partial air truce, such as suspending missile and drone strikes, possibly as a gesture to meet Trump’s demands. However, full ceasefire terms remain unresolved.
Following the envoy’s visit, Trump publicly stated that “great progress was made” and confirmed his administration’s plan to impose new secondary sanctions on Russia’s trading partners if Moscow does not commit to peace by the August 8 deadline. Tariffs have already been raised on India for its continued importation of Russian oil, signaling intensified international pressure. U.S. officials emphasized that these sanctions will proceed regardless of Russia’s diplomatic gestures.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke by phone with Trump later the same day, during a call joined by several European leaders. Zelensky expressed cautious optimism, stating that Russia appears more inclined to pursue a ceasefire, but he warned against being misled by vague promises. He also reiterated Ukraine’s position that any agreement must lead to a lasting and trustworthy peace.
The White House confirmed that Trump is open to meeting with both Putin and Zelensky in the coming days. Reports suggest Trump may first meet privately with Putin as early as next week, followed by a potential three-way summit including Zelensky. The timing, location, and agenda of such meetings have not been disclosed and are still under negotiation.
Despite the diplomatic push, President Putin remains guarded and reportedly unconvinced by Western threats. Kremlin insiders suggest he doubts the effectiveness of Washington’s sanctions leverage. The security situation remains dire, as Russia continues to carry out deadly strikes in Ukraine, including a recent missile attack that killed dozens in the Zaporizhzhia region. Ukrainian officials and allies accuse Moscow of using diplomatic overtures to buy time while continuing its military objectives.
Trump’s involvement marks the most direct U.S. attempt to mediate the conflict since it began. However, analysts warn that without concrete and enforceable commitments from all parties, the conflict could persist or worsen.
