Donald Glover Reveals Stroke and Undetected Heart Defect Forced 2024 Tour Cancellation
Actor and musician Donald Glover has disclosed the serious health crisis that led to the cancellation of his 2024 Childish Gambino tour, revealing he suffered a stroke and later underwent multiple surgeries for a previously undetected “hole in my heart.” The candid admission came during his return to the stage this weekend at the Camp Flog Gnaw festival.
In a highly anticipated and emotional address during his headlining performance at Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival in Los Angeles on Saturday night, actor and musician Donald Glover finally revealed the full extent of the health ordeal that forced him to abruptly cancel his 2024 New World Tour. The artist, who performs under the moniker Childish Gambino, informed a stunned audience that he suffered a stroke mid-tour, followed by the discovery of a serious congenital heart defect that required multiple subsequent surgeries.
Glover, who is 42, described experiencing a “really bad pain in my head” and rapidly deteriorating vision while performing in Louisiana but insisted on completing the show. It was only upon reaching Houston that he sought emergency medical care, where doctors delivered the diagnosis that he had experienced a stroke. Glover, who at the time only cited an “ailment” and “scheduled surgery” for the tour cancellation, recounted his immediate reaction: “The first thing was like, ‘I’m letting everybody down.'” He went on to joke about the shared experience with actor Jamie Foxx, who suffered a stroke in 2023.
The stroke was not the end of his medical challenges. Glover further revealed that doctors subsequently found a “hole in my heart,” a condition that necessitated immediate and complex medical intervention. This heart defect, along with a broken foot sustained during the recovery process, forced him to undergo multiple surgeries and ultimately cancel the remaining dates of his North American, U.K., and European tour in late 2024. Reflecting on the life-threatening experience, Glover shared a profound message with his fans: “They say everybody has two lives, and the second life starts when you realize you have one. You got one life, guys.” His return to the stage for the first time since the ordeal was met with widespread support from fans and peers.
