Internal tensions within the Department of Health and Social Care and the wider cabinet have intensified following controversial policy decisions, including cuts to winter fuel payments and a widely criticized “island of strangers” speech delivered by the prime minister.
Despite the mounting pressure and the loss of a key ally who had overseen the recruitment of 2,000 new GPs, Starmer has so far vowed to remain in office. The prime minister insisted during a recent cabinet meeting that he would not “walk away” and intends to prove his doubters wrong.
However, with senior figures like Streeting now openly questioning his authority and a growing rebellion on the backbenches, the stability of the government remains increasingly precarious as the party grapples with its most significant leadership challenge since taking power in 2024.
