US Plans Moon Nuclear Reactor and Introduces $15,000 Tourist Visa Bond

The United States has unveiled two major initiatives: a fast-tracked lunar nuclear reactor project and a controversial tourist visa bond fee of up to $15,000.


Fast-Track to Deploy Lunar Nuclear Reactor by 2030

The acting NASA Administrator has launched an urgent mission to build a 100-kilowatt nuclear reactor on the Moon by 2030. The reactor is expected to support lunar bases and extended missions under the Artemis program.

This development builds on NASA’s prior Fission Surface Power project. The new directive gives private companies 60 days to submit proposals, and a project leader is to be appointed immediately.


Why Nuclear Power on the Moon Matters

The compact reactor, weighing less than six tonnes, is designed to run independently for at least ten years. It will function during long lunar nights and in shadowed areas, making it critical to long-term Moon and Mars missions.

Nuclear energy is seen as essential for sustainable human exploration beyond Earth.


Visa Bond Policy Aims to Reduce Overstays

Separately, the US government is introducing a one-year pilot program requiring tourists from select countries to post refundable bonds of up to $15,000.

This applies to nations with high visa overstay rates or weak vetting systems. A separate $250 visa integrity fee will also be added for most tourist applications.

The move is aimed at improving immigration compliance, but critics argue it could hurt the US tourism sector.


Global Stakes: Reactor Race and Travel Policy Impact

The US is racing to build the lunar reactor before rivals such as China and Russia. Meanwhile, the visa bond initiative highlights stricter immigration enforcement under the Trump administration.

Both actions signal America’s dual focus on securing space dominance and tightening border policies.
