United States Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth officially announced the launch of “Operation Southern Spear,” a new military mission focused on the Western Hemisphere with the stated objective of combating “narco-terrorists” and securing the US homeland from the influx of illegal drugs. The announcement follows a significant and ongoing deployment of US naval and air assets to the South American region, including the massive USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier strike group, a buildup that has heightened geopolitical tensions and prompted a major military mobilization from Venezuela. Led by Joint Task Force Southern Spear and US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), the operation is described by Secretary Hegseth as vital to defending “America’s neighborhood” and eliminating transnational criminal threats within the hemisphere.
The launch of Operation Southern Spear comes amid an already aggressive anti-drug trafficking campaign by the Trump administration in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific, which has included a series of lethal strikes on alleged drug-trafficking vessels. Pentagon officials confirmed that US forces have destroyed over twenty vessels in international waters since early September, resulting in dozens of reported fatalities.
