The United States Treasury Department, under the direction of Secretary Scott Bessent, is moving to immediately terminate all federal benefits being disbursed to undocumented immigrants, a move directly implementing a core policy objective of the Trump administration. The action is based on an executive order signed by President Donald Trump that aims to strictly uphold federal law and preserve taxpayer resources exclusively for American citizens and legally eligible permanent residents. While federal law, notably the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (PRWORA), already prohibits undocumented immigrants from receiving most major public benefits like food stamps or standard Medicaid, the Treasury’s immediate action targets any remaining or indirectly accessible financial aid.
The President’s executive order, entitled “Ending Taxpayer Subsidization of Open Borders,” was issued earlier this year and declares that its purpose is to prevent taxpayer resources from acting as a “magnet” for illegal immigration. Secretary Bessent’s actions involve tightening verification systems and directing agencies that administer benefits, loans, and other financial assistance to identify any programs that might currently permit undocumented immigrants to obtain cash or non-cash public benefits. Earlier this year, the Treasury entered into an agreement with the Department of Homeland Security, giving immigration enforcement agencies access to certain taxpayer data of undocumented immigrants to aid in deportation efforts.
