Times Square Ball to Drop Twice in 2026 to Celebrate America 250 Semiquincentennial
The iconic Times Square Ball will serve as the centerpiece for a historic double celebration in 2026 to mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Organizers from the Times Square Alliance and America250, the nonpartisan congressional commission overseeing the Semiquincentennial, announced that the famous crystal sphere will feature a patriotic transformation. Immediately following the traditional midnight countdown on December 31, 2025, the newly unveiled Constellation Ball will be relit in a vibrant red, white, and blue design. At approximately 12:04 a.m. on New Year’s Day, the ball will rise again above the illuminated “2026” numerals to signal the official start of the nation’s milestone year. This post-midnight moment will be accompanied by a specialized release of two thousand pounds of patriotic confetti and a pyrotechnic finale set to Ray Charles’ soulful rendition of America the Beautiful.
In an unprecedented move for the 120-year-old tradition, the ball is scheduled to drop for a second time on July 3, 2026. This summertime event will mark the first time in history that the Times Square Ball has descended outside of a New Year’s Eve celebration. Rosie Rios, the Chair of America250 and former Treasurer of the United States, stated that the July 3 countdown is designed to anchor nationwide Independence Day festivities and inspire a sense of unity across the country. The summer drop will mirror the grandeur of the New Year’s Eve ceremony and serves as a major component of a year-long series of events planned from Guam to Alaska. This historic first is expected to draw massive crowds to the crossroads of the world during the height of the summer tourism season in New York City.
The 2026 celebrations also debut the ninth iteration of the Times Square Ball, which has been significantly upgraded for this milestone year. Known as the Constellation Ball, the new sphere is the largest and most technologically advanced version to date, weighing over twelve thousand pounds and measuring twelve and a half feet in diameter. It features more than five thousand circular Waterford Crystal discs that replace the traditional triangular panels used in previous versions. These new circular crystals are designed to better refract light and symbolize the interconnectedness of the American people and the infinite possibilities of the future. The ball’s lighting system has also been enhanced with thousands of LED light pucks capable of displaying millions of colors and generative patterns that react to audio inputs.
Beyond the spectacle in Times Square, the New Year’s countdown will launch “America Gives,” a national service initiative aimed at making 2026 the largest year of volunteerism in American history. This program encourages citizens to engage in grassroots community service as a way to commemorate the founding principles of the nation. The Semiquincentennial year will also include several other high-profile events in New York, such as Sail4th 250, which will bring the largest fleet of tall ships in history into the New York Harbor.
