Supreme Court Temporarily Backs Trump Administration Pause on Full SNAP Payments
The U.S. Supreme Court has granted the Trump administration permission to temporarily halt full Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) payments amid a continuing dispute over federal funding during the ongoing government shutdown. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson issued the administrative stay on Friday, allowing the administration to pause a lower court order that had required full SNAP benefit disbursement this month.
The case stems from the administration’s announcement that SNAP payments would be reduced due to limited available funds caused by the budget impasse. A federal judge had earlier ruled that full funding must continue to protect millions of Americans who depend on the program for food assistance. The Supreme Court’s stay, however, suspends that ruling until an appellate court decides whether the government can proceed with reduced payments.
According to court documents, Justice Jackson stated that the pause is intended to allow time for a full review of the case without disrupting government operations. The stay will remain in effect until the appellate court delivers its decision or until the Supreme Court issues further instruction.
The uncertainty surrounding SNAP payments has created confusion among states. Some states began processing full payments in compliance with the previous court order, while others delayed distribution pending the Supreme Court’s action. Food security advocates have warned that any reduction in benefits could worsen hunger levels nationwide, especially among low-income households already affected by inflation and job disruptions.
