The rejection delivers a significant blow to Democrats. They are currently competing in a fierce, mid-decade national redistricting war.
The controversy stems from a constitutional amendment that over three million Virginia voters narrowly approved during an April referendum.
The measure sought to grant the Democratic-controlled General Assembly the authority to draw new boundary lines. Under the proposed plan, ten out of the state’s eleven congressional districts would have favored Democratic candidates.
This proposed layout aimed to counter similar partisan gerrymandering efforts advanced by Republicans in other states. However, the Virginia Supreme Court struck down the ballot measure last week in a narrow 4-3 decision. The state court ruled that the legislature violated strict constitutional procedures.
They advanced the proposal after early voting had already commenced.
Attorneys for the state argued that the local court committed judicial defiance by overriding the will of the electorate. They contended that early voting does not alter the official legal date of an election. However, the state’s high court determined that the process undermined the integrity of the vote.
The ruling stated that lawmakers deprived citizens of a proper intervening election. Former President Donald Trump praised the local ruling on social media. He called it a massive victory for the Republican Party. The high court’s latest intervention effectively keeps the existing 2021 congressional map active for the election cycle.
That map was previously drawn by court-appointed special masters. It splits the current delegation with six Democrats and five Republicans.
Democratic leaders expressed deep disappointment with the outcome.
They urged candidates to pivot their strategies quickly. State officials stated that they must now focus their energy on mobilizing voters within the established district boundaries. The nationwide struggle over congressional maps has intensified following a recent Supreme Court decision that weakened the Voting Rights Act.
That ruling allowed several conservative states to adjust their voting maps to favor Republican incumbents. Both political parties must now adjust to the finality of the Virginia decision. The national battle for control of Congress remains tightly contested heading into the fall campaign.
