Super Eagles Confirmed to Face Gabon in African Play-Off for 2026 World Cup

Nigeria’s Super Eagles are set to square off against Gabon in one of the semi-finals of the CAF “Super 4” play-offs, the final stage of Africa’s qualification process for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The matchup was confirmed after Nigeria secured a play-off berth by finishing as one of the four best runners-up across the continental groups.

The two-leg showdown is scheduled to take place on November 13 in Morocco, under a neutral venue format designed to determine which nation advances to the intercontinental play-off stage. If Nigeria triumphs over Gabon, they will face the winner of the Cameroon vs. DR Congo semi-final in the “Super 4” final on November 16. That final winner will then contend in the intercontinental play-offs, vying for a place in the World Cup tournament proper.

While the path is challenging, Nigeria enters as the higher-ranked side in CAF’s play-off bracket, positioning them favorably against Gabon on paper. Nevertheless, analysts have cautioned that knock-out football is unpredictable and that Gabon will be eager to cause an upset. With pressure mounting and national hope at stake, the Super Eagles must deliver when it matters most.
