President Trump Vows Retaliation for Syria Attack, Condemns Brown University and Hanukkah Shootings
President Donald Trump addressed three separate, devastating acts of violence that occurred over the weekend, utilizing his platform to mourn the victims, offer strong condemnation, and promise an aggressive response to the attacks targeting U.S. military forces abroad. The President spoke out regarding a deadly ambush in Syria, a mass shooting at Brown University in Rhode Island, and a fatal attack on a Jewish community celebration in Australia.
Syria Attack
On Saturday, President Trump pledged “very serious retaliation” following an attack in central Syria that killed two U.S. service members and one American civilian interpreter, and wounded three others. The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) attributed the ambush near Palmyra to a lone gunman linked to the Islamic State (IS) group. The American president used his social media platform, Truth Social, to mourn the loss of the three patriots and to hold IS responsible. He also noted that the President of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, was “extremely angry and disturbed by this attack,” underscoring the cooperation between the U.S. and Syrian forces in their joint counter-terrorism operations. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth echoed the sentiment, warning that anyone who targets Americans would be ruthlessly hunted down and killed.
Domestic and International Shootings
President Trump also weighed in on the domestic mass shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and the devastating attack on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia.
Regarding the Brown University incident, which resulted in two students killed and nine people wounded, President Trump confirmed that the FBI was already on the scene, providing federal assistance to Providence authorities in their ongoing manhunt for the shooter. The Brown campus was placed under an hours-long lockdown following the attack, which occurred during final exams in the Barus & Holley engineering building. A person of interest was later detained early Sunday morning.
Speaking on the massacre in Sydney, where gunmen killed at least 11 people at the “Chanukah by the Sea” celebration, the President condemned the tragedy as a “purely antisemitic attack.” The attack followed a wave of antisemitic incidents across Australia. The President’s remarks align with those of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who called the massacre “an act of evil, antisemitism, terrorism,” confirming the targeted nature of the violence against the Jewish community as they celebrated the start of Hanukkah.
