NNPCL Increases Petrol Price to N1,270 Per Litre in Abuja
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has increased the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, from N1,250 to N1,270 per litre at its retail outlets in Abuja and neighbouring areas.
The latest adjustment represents a N20 increase per litre and was observed during a market survey conducted on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.
The increase comes amid continued changes in Nigeria’s downstream petroleum market, with filling stations across Abuja selling petrol at different prices.
Following the latest adjustment, motorists in Abuja and surrounding areas are reportedly paying between N1,230 and N1,299 per litre, depending on the filling station. MRS outlets, for example, are selling petrol at about N1,230 per litre, while some other stations have prices approaching N1,300.
The NNPCL price increase is particularly notable because it comes shortly after Dangote Refinery expanded its free petrol delivery initiative to 10 destinations, including Abuja. Under the arrangement, the refinery’s petrol is reportedly being supplied at an equivalent price of about N1,185 per litre.
The latest development is expected to increase competition among fuel marketers while giving consumers different pricing options. However, motorists who rely on NNPCL stations will now have to pay more for every litre purchased.
The changing petrol prices have also raised concerns about transportation costs. Higher fuel prices typically increase operating expenses for commercial transporters, which can lead to higher fares for passengers and increased costs for businesses that depend heavily on road transportation.
The development comes as Nigeria’s petrol market continues to adjust to changes in domestic refining, crude oil prices and fuel supply. Official data released by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority also showed that domestic petrol supply fell in July while imports increased.
For motorists in Abuja, the latest NNPCL adjustment means the price of petrol remains above N1,200 per litre, despite recent price reductions at some filling stations.
