Man Fatally Shot by ICE in Houston Was Not the Intended Target, DHS Confirms

Houston ICE shooting Lorenzo Salgado Araujo

Houston Man Fatally Shot by ICE Was Not the Intended Target, DHS Confirms
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has confirmed that Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a fifty-two-year-old Mexican national fatally shot by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Houston on July 7, 2026, was not the intended target of their enforcement operation.

According to officials, ICE agents were conducting a targeted operation based on a law enforcement tip to apprehend individuals from Guatemala. Officers had been conducting surveillance on a specific address where they had previously observed two white vans. On the morning of the shooting, as officers approached the location, they observed a white van driven by Salgado Araujo and initiated a traffic stop, stating they believed the driver resembled their intended target.

ICE agents claimed that Salgado Araujo “weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer,” prompting the officer to fire in self-defense. Salgado Araujo was struck in the abdomen and later died at a hospital. However, federal officials have not released any video or photographic evidence to corroborate the agents’ account. A DHS spokesperson confirmed that the officers involved were not equipped with body-worn or dashboard cameras, citing government funding lapses.

The fatal encounter has drawn intense scrutiny, as Salgado Araujo had lived in the United States for over thirty-five years with no criminal record and was simply driving a crew to a homebuilding site at the time. Following the shooting, three other men in the van, including his brother, were detained. The incident is currently under active investigation by the DHS Office of Inspector General and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
