Magnitude 6.1 Earthquake Strikes Northwest Venezuela
A powerful earthquake measuring at least magnitude 6.1 shook northwest Venezuela on Wednesday, with tremors felt across several states including the capital, Caracas. The quake was also reported in parts of neighboring Colombia, forcing many residents to rush out of their homes and buildings in fear.
The epicenter was located near Mene Grande in Zulia state, about 600 kilometers west of Caracas, at a shallow depth of roughly 7 to 8 kilometers, making it one of the stronger seismic events in the region this year.
Authorities have not yet reported casualties or major damage, but emergency response teams remain on high alert. The quake’s closeness to Venezuela’s vital oil-producing zones around Lake Maracaibo has sparked concern over potential risks to energy infrastructure.
