Israel-Premier Tech Excluded from Giro dell Emilia Over Protest Concerns
Organizers of the Giro dell’Emilia cycling race in Italy have announced that the Israel-Premier Tech team will not participate in the event scheduled for October 4, citing safety concerns. The decision follows fears that pro-Palestinian protests could target the team due to Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza.
The announcement comes shortly after the Vuelta a España, where Israel-Premier Tech faced repeated demonstrations during various stages of the race. Italian race officials expressed concern that the finish line in Bologna could be particularly vulnerable to similar disruptions.
Adriano Amici, president of the organizing body, explained that the exclusion was a difficult but necessary choice to protect riders, staff, and spectators. He emphasized that the priority was ensuring the safety of everyone involved in the event.
The controversy has also fueled ongoing debates within professional cycling about whether Israel-Premier Tech should consider rebranding or altering its registration. Sponsors and local officials have voiced unease over the protests and their potential impact on the sport.
