Cameroon opposition leader to face legal action over election unrest – government says
Cameroon’s government has announced plans to take legal action against opposition leader Maurice Kamto following unrest that erupted after the country’s recent elections. Authorities accuse Kamto, leader of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (MRC), of inciting violence and destabilizing public order after alleging widespread irregularities in the vote count.
Government spokesperson René Emmanuel Sadi confirmed that investigations have begun to determine Kamto’s alleged role in what officials describe as “coordinated attempts to undermine national stability.” The move has sparked criticism from human rights groups, who warn that the charges could further heighten political tensions and deepen mistrust in the country’s fragile democratic process.
Kamto, who has long positioned himself as President Paul Biya’s main rival, rejected the accusations, insisting that his party has only called for peaceful protests to demand transparency in the electoral process. He accused the government of using intimidation tactics to silence dissent and avoid scrutiny over alleged vote manipulation.
Observers fear the renewed confrontation could worsen divisions in Cameroon, already struggling with security challenges in its Anglophone regions and growing public frustration over governance.
