Bungie Confirms Significant Layoffs Amid Studio Reorganization
Bungie officially announced a major “reduction in force” on Wednesday, June 25, 2026, as part of a comprehensive company-wide reorganization. The move, which leadership described as a “difficult” but “necessary” step, follows the recent release of the final content update for Destiny 2 earlier this month. PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst confirmed that the layoffs include most of the development team dedicated to the Destiny franchise, as well as some members of the Marathon team and various Sony Interactive Entertainment staff members who supported Bungie’s operations.
The restructuring comes after studio leadership admitted that Destiny 2 had fallen short of financial and player engagement expectations over the past several years. In a public statement, Bungie explained that following the conclusion of Destiny 2’s active development, and with future projects currently in early stages of incubation, the studio could no longer sustain its previous operational size. Reports also confirmed that Bungie studio head Justin Truman is stepping down as part of this shift in leadership and strategy.
Despite the workforce reductions, Sony has emphasized that the upcoming extraction shooter Marathon remains a critical component of its portfolio. Remaining development staff at Bungie will continue to support Marathon as it builds on its current foundation while simultaneously transitioning focus toward new incubation efforts for future projects.
While specific figures regarding the total number of affected employees have not been disclosed, the announcement marks the latest in a series of workforce adjustments at the studio since its acquisition by Sony in 2022. As the organization moves forward, Bungie leadership has stated that further information regarding the studio’s long-term future will be shared at a later date.
