Afghanistan and Pakistan Agree to Immediate Ceasefire After Doha Talks

Afghanistan and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire following high-level peace talks held in Doha, marking a significant step toward easing months of escalating cross-border tensions. The agreement, reached late Monday night, comes after weeks of diplomatic negotiations mediated by Qatari officials and attended by senior representatives from both nations.

Officials from both sides confirmed that the ceasefire would take effect immediately, with joint monitoring mechanisms established to ensure compliance along the volatile border regions. The discussions reportedly focused on preventing further cross-border shelling, improving intelligence sharing, and addressing concerns over militant groups operating within the border zones.

Afghanistan’s delegation, led by acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, emphasized the importance of “mutual respect and regional stability,” while Pakistan’s delegation reiterated its commitment to “peaceful coexistence and cooperation” with its neighbor. Sources close to the talks revealed that both parties agreed to continue dialogue in the coming weeks to finalize a framework for long-term border security cooperation.

The ceasefire marks the first major diplomatic breakthrough between Kabul and Islamabad in over a year, following repeated skirmishes and strained relations over militant activity and refugee issues. Regional observers have hailed the development as a positive step toward restoring trust and fostering regional peace.
