Streisand Slams Trump Over Kennedy Center Dispute

Iconic entertainer Barbra Streisand sharply criticized President Donald Trump on Thursday following an escalating legal and political dispute surrounding the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, calling the controversy a product of “one man’s name and unchecked ego.” Streisand, who was honored at the national cultural institution in 2008, voiced her outrage after the center’s Trump-appointed board voted to temporarily close the facility to the public.

The abrupt closure followed a series of court rulings blocking the administration’s efforts to add Trump’s name to the building’s main facade without congressional approval. In a public statement, Streisand described watching the conflict unfold as deeply painful, emphasizing that the revered venue was built to celebrate artistic freedom rather than serve individual political ambitions. According to an official news report published by Rolling Stone, Streisand highlighted that cultural institutions play a fundamental role in maintaining a vibrant democracy.

The dispute escalated after U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper ruled that the administration acted unlawfully when it previously placed Trump’s name on the building, ordering the immediate removal of the lettering. In response, the center covered the affected portion of the facade with a large tarp, which remains in place. Following additional judicial orders preventing physical modifications without prior notice, Trump threatened to cancel a planned $257 million renovation package and suggested the venue could be torn down entirely.

The board subsequently cited financial insolvency and imminent operational risks to justify locking the doors, prompting a fresh federal court order on Thursday that requires 30 days’ advance notice before any major structural alterations or demolition work can proceed.

Streisand rejected the board’s characterization of the sudden shutdown as a routine renovation pause, pointing out that closure plans were never discussed while Trump’s name remained displayed on the structure. She reiterated that the living memorial was created by Congress specifically to honor President John F. Kennedy and uphold his vision that artistic achievement serves as an essential mark of a free society.

As legal battles over the venue’s management continue in Washington, Streisand urged citizens to protect democratic norms and public cultural heritage, warning that a society loses its vital spirit when creative institutions are co-opted by political conflicts.
