Tehran Enters Second Day of Public Mourning for Slain Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei

Tehran entered its second day of official mourning ceremonies on July 5, 2026, as thousands gathered to pay their final respects to the late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Following his death in an airstrike at the start of the conflict with the U.S. and Israel on February 28, the government has declared a public holiday to facilitate the marathon funeral events currently taking place at the Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla complex.

The ceremonies, which authorities hope will project a message of national stability and defiance, feature the casket of the slain leader displayed in a glass case alongside those of his family members who were killed in the same attack. Mourners have been seen chanting slogans of vengeance and grief, a display that reflects the broader political tensions following the recent West Asia war. While the nation remains under a fragile ceasefire, both Tehran and Washington have indicated that the situation remains volatile.

The funeral events are scheduled to continue with processions through the capital on Monday, followed by further rites in the holy cities of Qom, Najaf, and Karbala. The body will ultimately be transported to his birthplace of Mashhad for burial on Thursday. Despite the massive turnout, the absence of his son and named successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, has remained a point of significant public and international speculation.
