Brooklyn Bridge Catches Fire During Independence Day Fireworks Display
A fire broke out on the iconic Brooklyn Bridge during New York City’s July 4, 2026, fireworks display. The incident occurred shortly before 10 p.m. as Macy’s annual Independence Day show was underway. Videos captured flames and thick plumes of smoke rising from at least three locations on the bridge structure while fireworks continued to burst overhead.
The New York City Fire Department dispatched two engines to the scene, and firefighters were observed dousing the blaze shortly after it began. The flames were extinguished within approximately one minute, and no injuries were reported. A department spokesperson stated that such fires are not unexpected during large-scale fireworks displays, which is why the bridge had been closed to public traffic and crowds were kept at a safe distance.
The celebratory event had been moved up earlier in the evening due to the threat of severe weather that disrupted Independence Day festivities across the East Coast. While officials are still working to determine the extent of any potential damage to the landmark, the immediate threat was successfully neutralized by emergency crews on-site.
