Heroic Guard Amin Abdullah Killed in San Diego Mosque Attack

Amin Abdullah San Diego shooting hero

Amin Abdullah, the security guard who lost his life in the shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego on Monday, May 18, 2026, is being widely celebrated as a hero for his courageous efforts to protect his community. The 29-year-old father of eight was among three victims killed when two teenage gunmen, identified by authorities as Cain Clark and Caleb Vazquez, opened fire outside the mosque. Police have praised Abdullah for his pivotal role in deterring the attackers from entering the facility, where approximately 140 children were located just steps away at the Bright Horizon Academy.

According to San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl, Abdullah engaged the gunmen in a gun battle and immediately triggered the mosque’s lockdown protocols via radio. His actions are credited with distracting and delaying the perpetrators, likely preventing a significantly higher death toll. Imam Taha Hassane and other community members described Abdullah as a “devoted father” and a “shining light” who was deeply committed to the safety and well-being of the congregants. Alongside Abdullah, two other mosque staff members, identified as Mansour Kaziha and Nader Awad, were also fatally shot during the attack.

The shooting, which occurred shortly before the midday prayer, is being investigated by local law enforcement and the FBI as a potential hate crime. Authorities reported that the two teenage suspects, aged 17 and 18, were later found dead in a vehicle a few blocks away from the scene from apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds. The tragedy has prompted an international outpouring of grief and support, with an online fundraising campaign for Abdullah’s family reportedly raising over $1.7 million to support his wife and eight children.

As the San Diego community mourns, religious leaders and local officials have called for solidarity against the rising tide of intolerance. The Islamic Center of San Diego, the largest mosque in the county, has requested that the public respect the privacy of the victims’ families during this difficult time. While investigators continue to piece together the motives behind the attackers—who writings suggest were radicalized online and held broad hateful views—Abdullah’s legacy as a protector of the innocent has become a focal point of tributes across the country.
