The Kansas City Royals officially announced on Tuesday that second baseman Jonathan India underwent a season-ending surgical procedure to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder. The 29-year-old infielder had been sidelined since April 18 and was previously placed on the 10-day injured list following a shoulder subluxation.
After undergoing extensive medical evaluations, the team’s medical staff determined that surgery was the necessary course of action to address the persistent instability in the joint. This development marks a premature end to India’s second campaign with the Royals, a tenure that has been frequently hampered by physical setbacks.
The former National League Rookie of the Year first sustained the shoulder injury during a defensive play in June of the previous year and attempted to manage the discomfort through various rehabilitation programs before the condition worsened this month.
Jonathan India finishes his abbreviated 2026 season with a .167 batting average, two home runs, and eight runs batted in across 17 appearances. His offensive output struggled to gain momentum as he played through the underlying shoulder issues during the early weeks of the current schedule. The loss of India presents a significant challenge for the Royals’ infield depth as they navigate a difficult stretch in the American League Central standings.
Manager Matt Quatraro acknowledged the difficulty of losing a veteran presence but emphasized that the priority remains India’s long-term health and professional career. The organization expects to transition India to the 60-day injured list shortly to facilitate roster adjustments as he begins a lengthy recovery process aimed at a return for the 2027 spring training session.
With India unavailable for the remainder of the year, the Royals will rely heavily on Michael Massey and Nick Loftin to handle the primary responsibilities at second base. Massey has recently returned from a calf strain and is expected to see the majority of starts at the position while the team searches for consistent offensive production.
The front office is also monitoring internal options within their minor league system to provide further coverage for the middle infield. India is currently entering the final stages of his arbitration eligibility and is slated to become a free agent following the conclusion of this season. This injury creates additional uncertainty regarding his future contract status as he enters the open market while recovering from a major surgical intervention.
