Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza Wins 2025 Heisman Trophy After Leading Hoosiers to Perfect Season
In a historic moment for the Indiana University football program, redshirt junior quarterback Fernando Mendoza was awarded the 2025 Heisman Memorial Trophy on Saturday night in New York City. Mendoza, who led the Hoosiers to a perfect 13-0 season, a Big Ten Championship, and the school’s first-ever No. 1 ranking, becomes the first Indiana player to win college football’s most prestigious individual award since its inception in 1935.
Mendoza, a transfer from California in his first year in Bloomington, received 2,362 total points in the final voting, including 643 first-place votes, decisively finishing ahead of Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia (1,435 points) and Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love (719 points). During an emotional acceptance speech at the Jazz at Lincoln Center, Mendoza, originally a lightly-recruited two-star prospect, tearfully thanked his family, teammates, and head coach, Curt Cignetti, stating, “Standing here tonight and holding this bad boy, representing Indiana University, still doesn’t feel real.”
The 6-foot-5 signal-caller’s Heisman campaign was built on unprecedented efficiency and consistent winning, not solely on volume statistics. Mendoza finished the season with 2,980 passing yards, a national-leading 33 passing touchdowns, and an elite 181.4 passer rating, against just six interceptions. He also added six touchdowns on the ground. His clutch performances included leading a game-winning comeback drive against Penn State and managing the clock effectively in the program’s historic Big Ten Championship victory over Ohio State. Mendoza’s leadership successfully transitioned Indiana from a perpetual underdog into the top seed for the upcoming 12-team College Football Playoff, where the Hoosiers will play a quarterfinal game at the Rose Bowl on January 1. Mendoza also swept the season’s major awards, having already been named the AP Player of the Year, the Maxwell Award winner, and the Davey O’Brien Award winner.
