Top GOP Senator Labels Jasmine Crocketts Senate Bid as Proof of Democratic Radicalism
A top Republican Senator has seized upon Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett’s entry into the Texas U.S. Senate race, claiming her candidacy publicly exposes the increasingly “radical” direction of the Democratic Party nationwide. In a swift and pointed response to Rep. Crockett’s Monday announcement, incumbent Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) immediately framed his new rival as a key representative of the Democratic Party’s “far-left fringe” that he argues is entirely out of step with the majority of Texans.
Senator Cornyn’s campaign released a statement and a video attacking the progressive congresswoman, saying, “Jasmine Crockett is not hiding her politics; she’s posing with them.” The campaign highlighted several of Ms. Crockett’s past controversial statements and verbal clashes with Republican colleagues on Capitol Hill, including labeling one opponent’s appearance and referring to the disabled Texas Governor Greg Abbott as “Gov. Hot Wheels.” The Republican National Senatorial Committee has publicly encouraged her run, viewing her high-profile and combative style as a potential liability in a statewide general election.
In his official response, Senator Cornyn called the congresswoman “radical, theatrical and ineffective,” and stated that her policy positions on immigration, taxation, and law enforcement prove she represents a progressive movement that is alienating mainstream voters across the country. He vowed that his campaign would ensure every Texas voter is aware of her “absurd” candidacy, a strategy that the GOP hopes will provide crucial “up-ballot support” for down-ballot Republican candidates, including those running in new congressional districts created under President Donald Trump’s plan. The Senate race is considered a top target for Democrats, but Republicans believe that Ms. Crockett’s ascent as a prominent voice may ultimately unify the Republican base against her.
