The Shreveport Police Department is currently investigating a tragic domestic violence incident that left eight children dead on Sunday morning. Local authorities identified the suspected shooter as Shamar Elkins. He was the father of seven of the children killed in the attack. The violence began before 6 a.m. in the Cedar Grove neighborhood of Shreveport, Louisiana.
Elkins first shot a woman at one house and then drove to a second home nearby. Seven children were found dead inside that second residence. An eighth child was shot while trying to escape through a roof exit. The victims were between one and fourteen years old. Law enforcement officers described the multiple crime scenes as some of the most gruesome they have ever seen. After the shootings, the suspect allegedly carjacked a vehicle to flee from the police. This led to a high-speed chase through the city. The pursuit ended when officers fatally shot Elkins. Two women were also wounded in the attack and are currently being treated at a local hospital.
One of the women is believed to be the mother of the children. Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux called the event an incredible tragedy for the entire community. The Caddo Parish Coroner’s Office is working to identify all the victims from the Sunday morning shooting. This incident is now being classified as a case of family annihilation. State detectives are assisting local police at four different locations related to the crime. Witnesses reported seeing some children trying to escape through the back door of the home during the shooting.
State Representative Tammy Phelps asked the public to pray for the first responders who arrived at the scene.
