UK Inflation Falls More Than Expected to 3.2% in November
United Kingdom inflation fell significantly faster than anticipated in November, reaching its lowest level in eight months and providing a boost to households ahead of the holiday season. Data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, revealed that the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) rose by 3.2% in the 12 months to November, down from 3.6% in October. The figure was well below the 3.5% forecast by a Reuters poll of economists and the Bank of England’s own projections, suggesting that the disinflationary process in the British economy is regaining momentum.
The ONS identified a sharp easing in food and non-alcoholic beverage prices as the primary catalyst for the decline. Despite the typical upward pressure on grocery costs during the festive period, annual food inflation fell to its lowest rate since April. Supermarkets notably lowered prices on staples such as cakes, biscuits, and breakfast cereals in a bid to attract cost-conscious shoppers. Additionally, price drops in alcohol, tobacco, and furniture contributed to the downward trend. Core inflation, which strips out more volatile energy and food costs, also saw a surprise dip from 3.4% to 3.2%, indicating that domestic price pressures are weakening across a broader range of sectors.
The timing of the report is critical, as it arrives just 24 hours before the Bank of England’s final monetary policy meeting of the year on Thursday, December 18. Investors have immediately increased bets on a 25 basis point interest rate cut, which would bring the base rate down from 4% to 3.75%. Market analysts suggest that the combination of cooling inflation and a softening labor market—with unemployment recently hitting 5.1%—provides the Monetary Policy Committee with the “festive gift” they needed to justify lower borrowing costs. Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves welcomed the data, stating that while the government’s top priority remains bringing bills down, the fall in inflation will provide much-needed relief to families worried about the cost of living.
