Suspects Wanted by FBI for Robbing Pro Athletes’ Homes Arrested in Chile

Police in Chile have arrested three Chilean nationals wanted by the FBI for their alleged involvement in a sophisticated international crime ring that targeted the luxury homes of high-profile professional athletes. The targeted individuals include major American sports stars as well as prominent South American figures. According to a statement released by Chilean authorities on Sunday, the criminal cell specialized in monitoring the public schedules and social media profiles of wealthy athletes to execute coordinated break-ins while the homeowners were away competing. The gang primarily sought out high-value loot, including luxury watches, designer jewelry, cash, and unique sports memorabilia like game-worn jerseys.

The break in the international investigation occurred last week in neighboring Argentina, where local law enforcement caught two members of the gang shortly after they successfully burglarized the home of retired tennis star Juan Martín del Potro—the 2009 U.S. Open champion. Commissioner Enrique Gutiérrez of Chilean Interpol confirmed that intelligence gathered during the arrests in Argentina directly led to the capture of a third primary suspect on Saturday back across the border in Chile. Because the group’s criminal footprint extends significantly into the United States, U.S. federal prosecutors have already filed formal arrest warrants with Chilean and Argentine authorities with a view toward immediate extradition.

The arrests are linked to an ongoing FBI crackdown on specialized “crime tourism” rings, specifically South American theft groups that enter the U.S. to systematically target affluent neighborhoods. In late 2024, the FBI issued an urgent sweeping advisory to major sports leagues—including the NFL, NBA, and NHL—warning players that organized gangs were tracking game days to bypass residential security systems. While Chilean police did not explicitly name the American victims connected to this specific trio, federal court records from associated cases show a rash of overlapping luxury home break-ins targeting superstars like Kansas City Chiefs icons Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, and NBA star Luka Dončić.

Aviation and border records reveal that the sophisticated theft ring frequently utilized temporary cell phones, disabled local Wi-Fi networks to disrupt home security feeds, and cataloged their stolen merchandise on encrypted cloud accounts. The U.S. Department of Justice previously brought charges against seven other individuals tied to the same broader network, estimating that the collective losses from the athlete burglaries exceed 2 million dollars. Law enforcement officials praised the cross-border cooperation between South American agencies and the FBI, noting that the arrests deliver a major blow to the organized syndicates that have increasingly exploited international travel programs to conduct high-end robberies.
