Shenna Bellows Withdraws from Maine Senate Race

Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows announced her withdrawal from the Democratic race for the U.S. Senate on Sunday, July 19, 2026. Bellows, who entered the contest following the resignation of former nominee Graham Platner, stated that she intends to focus exclusively on her duties as the state’s chief election officer as the country enters a high-stakes election cycle.

In her formal announcement, she cited the urgency of ongoing threats to democratic institutions, noting that the best way she can serve the state and country is by maintaining her role as Secretary of State.

Bellows’ departure follows a series of county caucuses where former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson established a commanding lead. Jackson secured approximately 91% of the delegates awarded during Saturday’s caucuses, effectively consolidating support within the party. Analysts noted that Bellows struggled to gain delegate traction, as her support overlapped significantly with other candidates like former public health chief Nirav Shah and Jordan Wood, which split the opposition vote.

Her brief campaign was also marked by a challenging debate performance at News Center Maine, which drew scrutiny from both sides of the aisle. The race to replace Platner will now head to the Democratic state nominating convention in Bangor on July 25, 2026. With Bellows out of the running, Jackson remains the clear favorite to secure the nomination and challenge incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins in the November general election.
