Sheik Gumi Says Funding Marriages Is Good Governance in Shariah State
Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has argued that using public funds to facilitate marriages can be considered a component of good governance in a state governed by Shariah principles.
Gumi made the statement while discussing government-supported mass marriage programmes and the role of public authorities in helping young people get married.
According to the cleric, where adultery and promiscuity are prohibited under Shariah, governments should also take practical steps to make lawful marriage more accessible to people who may struggle with the financial demands.
He argued that supporting marriage could help address some of the social challenges associated with young people remaining unmarried because of economic difficulties.
The comments come amid renewed discussions over mass wedding programmes in northern Nigeria, where some state governments have provided financial assistance and other forms of support to couples.
Gumi’s position is based on the view that governance should not only focus on infrastructure and economic development but should also address social and moral issues within the framework of the laws and values of the society being governed.
His comments have generated debate, particularly over whether public funds should be used to finance private family ceremonies and whether such programmes should be prioritised alongside other public needs.
Supporters of government-backed marriage initiatives argue that financial assistance can help young people establish families and reduce the economic barriers preventing marriage.
