President Donald Trump has significantly altered the aesthetic and historical narrative of the White House Colonnade by installing a series of partisan plaques beneath the portraits of former United States presidents. This installation, which the administration has officially dubbed the Presidential Walk of Fame, now features bronze-etched text containing sharp and often personal criticisms of his predecessors. While the display was originally established in September with portraits of past commanders-in-chief, the newly added explanatory plaques reflect the current president’s subjective assessments of their legacies. An introductory plaque at the start of the walkway notes that the exhibit was conceived and dedicated by President Trump as a tribute to past leaders whom he categorizes as good, bad, or somewhere in the middle.
The most provocative segment of the installation remains the space reserved for former President Joe Biden. In a move that has drawn significant criticism from historians, the traditional headshot of the 46th president has been replaced by a photograph of an autopen machine. The accompanying plaque labels Biden as Sleepy Joe and describes his tenure as being by far the worst in American history. Furthermore, the text repeats the president’s long-standing and unverified claims regarding the 2020 election, asserting that Biden took office as a result of a corrupt process. These additions continue a pattern of attempts by the current administration to delegitimize the previous democratic term while using official White House property to broadcast political grievances.
Other Democratic predecessors are also targeted in the bronze-etched descriptions. Former President Barack Obama is characterized on his plaque as one of the most divisive political figures in the history of the nation. The text specifically highlights the passage of the Affordable Care Act, which it pejoratively renames the Unaffordable Care Act, and credits it for subsequent Republican electoral victories. Similarly, the plaque for former President Bill Clinton focuses heavily on the Republican-led Congress of the 1990s rather than his own policy achievements. It also explicitly mentions that his wife, Hillary Clinton, lost the 2016 presidency to Donald Trump. Even Republican figures are not entirely spared from criticism, as the plaque for George W. Bush decries the start of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
In contrast to the harsh rebukes of Democratic rivals, the Presidential Walk of Fame offers high praise for leaders whom President Trump views as allies or inspirations. The plaque dedicated to Ronald Reagan is filled with warm language, describing him as the Great Communicator and highlighting his landslide re-election in 1984. Notably, the text claims that Reagan was a fan of Donald Trump long before his own historic run for the White House. This partisan reframing of history ensures that any foreign dignitaries or guests walking the colonnade toward the Oval Office are presented with a version of American history that mirrors the president’s own rhetoric. White House officials have defended the move, stating that the descriptions are eloquent and were largely authored by the president himself to provide a unique perspective on the office.
