Jay Jay Okocha and Obi Mikel Reveal How Their Famous Names Changed
Former Super Eagles captains Jay Jay Okocha and John Obi Mikel have revealed the interesting stories behind the names they became famous for during their football careers.
The two Nigerian football legends shared the stories during a podcast appearance, explaining that their famous names came about through circumstances they encountered while growing up and playing football.
Okocha explained that the name “Jay Jay” originated from his childhood neighbourhood, where he and his brothers regularly played street football. According to him, there were several people named Austin in the area, making it difficult to distinguish between them.
He said he was eventually identified as “Austin Jay Jay’s brother”, referring to his younger brother James, who was the person actually known as Jay Jay. The shortened version eventually stuck and became the nickname by which millions of football fans around the world know him.
Okocha also explained that the nickname became particularly useful when he began travelling outside Nigeria because people often struggled to pronounce his given name, Augustine. He eventually formalised the name in his official documentation.
For Mikel, the story was different. The former Chelsea midfielder revealed that his famous “Mikel” name came from a spelling mistake during his time with Nigeria’s Under-17 team.
Mikel said his name was supposed to be printed as Michael, but when the team prepared the players’ names, it came back as “Mikel.” Rather than treating the mistake as a problem, he decided to embrace the spelling.
The name quickly became associated with the talented young midfielder, particularly after his impressive performances for Nigeria’s youth teams. He later updated his official records to reflect the name that had already become popular in football.
Mikel has previously explained that his real name was John Michael Obi, and that the “Mikel” spelling was initially the result of a mistake. He said he consulted his father before deciding to adopt the name.
Both Okocha and Mikel went on to enjoy highly successful international careers, making their adopted football names household names across Nigeria and beyond.
Their revelations have given fans a fresh look at the personal stories behind two of the most recognisable names in Nigerian football history.
