Hegseth Honors Fallen Servicemembers of Operation Epic Fury, Highlights New Naval Mission

United States Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has issued a solemn tribute honoring the American servicemembers who lost their lives during Operation Epic Fury, the intensive 38-day joint military campaign waged against Iran earlier this year. Speaking during a comprehensive Pentagon security briefing, Hegseth paused to recognize the heavy human cost of the conflict, which concluded its major combat phase in early April following a brokered ceasefire. The secretary extended specific honors to the fallen soldiers of the 718th Engineering Company, praising their ultimate sacrifice and emphasizing that their valor directly secured a historic strategic victory that systematically dismantled Tehran’s conventional offensive apparatus.

The tribute to the fallen heroes served as a somber prelude to a broader operational update detailing Washington’s post-war maritime strategy in the Middle East. Alongside Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine, Hegseth detailed the launch of “Project Freedom,” a new defensive initiative explicitly separated from the original parameters of Operation Epic Fury. The secretary explained that while the major combat operations successfully leveled more than 85% of Iran’s defense industrial base and razed its conventional navy, a dedicated, continuous presence is required to permanently break Iranian extortion and maintain air and sea control across the critical shipping lanes of the Persian Gulf.

According to Pentagon planners, Project Freedom establishes an ironclad maritime security framework described as a “red, white, and blue dome” over the region. The operation coordinates over 100 military aircraft, guided-missile destroyers, and roughly 15,000 personnel synchronized under the tactical oversight of the 82nd Airborne Division. General Caine noted that advanced joint all-domain command and control (JADC2) networks are being actively utilized to neutralize persistent threats from Iranian fast boats and one-way attack drones. Hegseth reiterated that while the Trump administration remains engaged in fragile bilateral peace negotiations, U.S. forces remain “locked and loaded” to execute immediate kinetic destruction against any hostile assets attempting to violate the ongoing counter-blockade or disrupt international commerce.
