Mark Wood, the 35-year-old speedster, has been ruled out of the contest after experiencing soreness in his left knee, which is the same joint that required surgery in March and sidelined him for nine months. Having only bowled eleven overs in the swift first Test defeat, the decision was made to manage the fast bowler’s fitness carefully for the remainder of the five-match series, particularly given his history of injury setbacks. The team will rely on the remaining pace options, including Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, and Brydon Carse, alongside the captain Ben Stokes.
Will Jacks, a twenty-seven-year-old off-spin-bowling all-rounder, will slot into the lineup, making his third Test appearance. His inclusion over specialist spinner Shoaib Bashir or back-up seamer Josh Tongue is widely seen as an attempt to deepen the batting capability after England suffered two dramatic collapses in Perth, failing to capitalize on the advantage the bowlers created in the first innings.
