Judge Rejects Ghislaine Maxwell’s Bid to Overturn Conviction for Helping Jeffrey Epstein Abuse Teenage Girls
A US federal judge has rejected Ghislaine Maxwell’s attempt to overturn her conviction and 20-year prison sentence for helping convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein sexually abuse teenage girls.
US District Judge Paul Engelmayer rejected Maxwell’s latest legal challenge in a ruling made public on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. The judge described her claims as meritless and said most of them were either arguments she had previously raised or issues that should have been addressed earlier in the legal process.
Maxwell, who represented herself in the latest petition, argued that her conviction amounted to a miscarriage of justice. She cited newly released documents connected to the Epstein investigation and claimed that her constitutional rights had been violated during her 2021 trial.
However, Judge Engelmayer found that much of the material Maxwell described as new evidence was irrelevant to her conviction. He said some of the documents, rather than helping her case, actually supported the evidence that had been presented against her.
Maxwell was convicted in December 2021 after prosecutors accused her of helping Epstein recruit and groom underage girls for sexual abuse. She was subsequently sentenced to 20 years in federal prison.
Her latest petition was one of her most significant attempts to have the conviction overturned. The judge rejected her arguments concerning alleged prosecutorial misconduct, evidentiary issues and claims surrounding the handling of Epstein-related information.
The ruling means Maxwell remains in prison while serving her sentence. Her previous efforts to overturn the conviction have also failed, including an appeal that was rejected by the US Supreme Court in 2025.
The case continues to attract international attention because of Maxwell’s long association with Epstein and the renewed public interest in documents connected to his activities.
