Trump Orders Cuts to Korea Drills
President Donald Trump has directed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to substantially reduce upcoming joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea.
Writing on social media, the president criticized the large-scale drills as unnecessarily costly and argued that they send an inappropriate and hostile signal to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. While noting that it was too late to call off the scheduled multi-day exercises entirely, the administration pressed forward with scaling back the deployment of joint personnel and tactical operations.
The decision arrived alongside pointed commentary regarding regional alliances and international contributions. Trump explicitly linked his frustration to an unfulfilled request asking Seoul to join Washington-led efforts regarding Iran, noting that South Korean leadership declined to participate.
Emphasizing his personal rapport with Pyongyang, Trump defended the pivot as a step toward reducing financial waste and easing geopolitical tensions on the Korean Peninsula. Critics and defense analysts, however, expressed concern that abruptly downsizing readiness drills could undermine defensive deterrence and strain long-standing security coordination between Washington and Seoul.
