Berlin Pride Van Attack Kills One and Injures 16
One person was killed and at least sixteen others were injured after a white van struck pedestrians gathered in Tiergarten park near the Brandenburg Gate during Berlin’s annual Pride celebrations. The vehicle entered the park at around 10:00 p.m. local time on Saturday, hitting multiple individuals before crashing into a tree. According to a report published by The Guardian, German authorities launched a large-scale manhunt for a 21-year-old suspect identified as Abdul B., who fled the scene on foot. Police noted that several of the injured victims suffered life-threatening conditions.
The sudden violence abruptly ended Christopher Street Day, which had brought hundreds of thousands of participants to the German capital for one of Europe’s largest LGBTQ+ gatherings. Event organizers and police instructed attendees to evacuate the area immediately around 10:15 p.m., halting live stage performances near the landmark gate. More than 2,200 police personnel were deployed throughout Berlin to secure the parade route and surrounding festivities. Emergency services established a temporary helicopter landing zone near the Reichstag to facilitate rapid transport of critically wounded victims to medical centers.
Investigators are also looking into witness reports indicating that some individuals may have sustained knife injuries following the vehicular impact. Berlin police spokespersons confirmed that the identified suspect was already known to law enforcement as a member of local Islamist circles. Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner publicly condemned the tragic occurrence, characterizing the incident as a direct assault on the city’s open and tolerant society.
