A statement released by his office on Monday included an official medical update from Congress’s Office of the Attending Physician, which confirmed that the 84-year-old Republican is undergoing an intensive physical therapy regimen. Doctors explained that his ongoing physical therapy involves multiple sessions each day aimed at rebuilding his physical strength and lowering the risk of future falls. According to an official update published by The Guardian, medical personnel confirmed that McConnell’s childhood battle with polio remains a significant factor influencing his current mobility.
The extended recovery period means McConnell will miss the political picnic in western Kentucky this Saturday, an event he has regularly attended for over four decades. In a personal statement, McConnell expressed regret over missing the event but emphasized that he is working diligently under medical supervision to regain his strength. He noted that his primary objective remains completing his physical therapy so he can return to his regular schedule in Washington and Kentucky. McConnell was originally admitted to the hospital on June 14 following a fall at his home, though details regarding the incident were kept private for several weeks. He later clarified that he was briefly unconscious during the fall and was also treated for a mild case of pneumonia during his hospital stay. Despite his absence from floor votes, McConnell’s staff confirmed that he continues to coordinate with legislative aides on federal appropriations, constituent services, and key policy matters. Although McConnell previously announced he will not seek reelection, he has reiterated his intention to serve out the remainder of his Senate term.
