Hegseth and Caine Defend Iran War Funding Before Senate Panel Amid Rising Casualties

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine appeared before the Senate Appropriations Committee on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, to defend the Trump administration’s sweeping supplemental funding request. The high-stakes hearing took place against a backdrop of escalating hostilities in the Middle East following the recent collapse of a fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran.

Confronting Mounting Costs and Casualties
During the at-times contentious hearing, Hegseth publicly estimated that the ongoing military campaign against Iran has cost approximately $37.5 billion to date. The administration is pressing Congress to approve a major budget package that includes roughly $67 billion in direct war funding as part of an overarching $87.6 billion supplemental request.

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle subjected the defense chiefs to intense scrutiny regarding the strategic objectives and human toll of the campaign. The hearing followed a deadly weekend for U.S. forces that saw three American service members killed—two in an Iranian strike and another during a controlled explosion in Iraq—bringing the total U.S. military death toll since the conflict began in February to 17. Pentagon officials confirmed that nearly 100 service members have been injured in regional strikes throughout July.

Friction Over Strategy and Resource Depletion
Democratic senators, led by panel vice-chair Sen. Patty Murray, sharply questioned the shifting rationale behind the conflict, accusing the administration of driving the country toward an open-ended “forever war”. Critics also pressed the administration on critically depleted stockpiles of precision munitions and missile interceptors, warning that continuous high-intensity operations leave the U.S. vulnerable globally.

Hegseth pushed back against the criticism, framing the funding package as an essential investment in national deterrence and readiness. He stated that a substantial portion of the requested funds is urgently needed to restock critical weapon systems, stabilize fuel shortfalls, and replace equipment utilized during recent operations. General Caine echoed these sentiments, honoring the fallen service members while emphasizing the necessity of the resources to manage escalating global threats.
