Toxic Chemical Leak Prompts Evacuations in Garden Grove
Garden Grove chemical leak GKN Aerospace
Emergency crews in Garden Grove, California, spent much of Thursday, May 21, 2026, responding to a significant hazardous materials incident at a GKN Aerospace facility located on Western Avenue.
The leak, which originated from a large holding tank on the property, released methyl methacrylateβa flammable liquid used in the production of resins and adhesivesβinto the air, triggering immediate evacuations for residents and businesses in the surrounding area.
The Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) arrived on the scene at approximately 4:35 p.m. following reports of the tank venting hazardous vapors.
Out of an abundance of caution, authorities established an evacuation zone encompassing the area north of Garden Grove Boulevard, east of Monarch Street, south of Orangewood Avenue, and west of Beach Boulevard.
Residents within this radius were ordered to leave their homes, while officials worked to contain the breach and prevent the chemical from overheating or igniting.
To accommodate displaced individuals, the city opened temporary care and shelter facilities at the Rancho Alamitos High School gymnasium and the Stanton Community Center. While the immediate vicinity remained cordoned off well into the evening, hazardous materials teams remained on-site to stabilize the tank and conduct air quality monitoring.
There were no immediate reports of mass injuries, though the incident caused significant disruption to local traffic and raised concerns regarding the proximity of industrial operations to residential neighborhoods.
As of early Friday morning, the situation remains under active management. Local officials have encouraged residents to monitor AlertOC.gov for real-time updates regarding the status of the evacuation orders and potential repopulation timelines.
This incident marks another major emergency response in Southern California this week, coinciding with a series of brush fires that have strained local resources across the region.
