This victory allowed Colorado to win the second-round series four games to one. The Avalanche demonstrated remarkable resilience after trailing by three goals early in the contest. They will now wait to face the winner of the series between the Vegas Golden Knights and the Anaheim Ducks.
The game-winning moment arrived when Martin Necas carried the puck behind the Minnesota net. He found an open Kulak in the slot for a quick one-timer. Kulak had joined the team in February via a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins. His goal completed a massive turnaround for the home squad.
Colorado had looked vulnerable in the first period but found their rhythm as the game progressed. The Avalanche have now reached the conference final eight times since moving to Denver.
Minnesota initially dominated the game with a lightning-fast start. Marcus Johansson scored just 34 seconds after the opening puck drop. Nick Foligno then added two more goals to give the Wild a 3-0 lead. This early deficit forced Colorado head coach Jared Bednar to make a goaltending change.
He pulled Mackenzie Blackwood after the first period. Scott Wedgewood entered the game and stopped all seven shots he faced. His steady performance allowed the Avalanche offense time to mount a recovery.
The comeback began in the second period and intensified during the final frame. Jack Drury cut the lead to 3-2 with a tip-in with less than four minutes remaining. With their goalie pulled for an extra attacker, Nathan MacKinnon tied the game.
He whipped a sharp shot into the top corner with only 1:23 left in regulation. MacKinnon’s heroics ignited the crowd and shifted all momentum toward the Avalanche. The Wild were unable to recover their composure before Kulak ended the series in overtime.
