Joseph Vijay’s debut party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has emerged as the frontrunner in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, creating a seismic shift in the state’s political landscape. As counting progressed on Monday, May 4, 2026, early trends indicated that TVK is leading in 111 out of 234 constituencies, rapidly approaching the majority mark of 118 seats.
This surge has pushed the traditional heavyweights into a secondary position, with the AIADMK-led alliance leading in approximately 70 seats and the ruling DMK, led by Chief Minister MK Stalin, relegated to a distant third with leads in 44 seats.

In a shocking development for the ruling party, Chief Minister MK Stalin is currently trailing in his long-time bastion of Kolathur.
As of the second round of counting, TVK candidate V.S. Babu held a lead of over 1,200 votes against Stalin, a trend that has stunned political observers. Conversely, celebrations have erupted at Vijay’s residence and TVK offices across the state, with cadres dancing and whistling as the party maintains its lead in key districts like Salem and Anna Nagar.
The scale of TVK’s debut performance has already revived discussions regarding post-poll arithmetic in Chennai, although TVK leaders have expressed confidence in forming a government “without support.” While exit polls had largely predicted a second straight term for the DMK-led alliance, the actual counting data reveals a significant consolidation of the Vanniyar and Mukkulathor Thevar votebanks in favor of Vijay’s party.
