ICC Formally Charges Ex-Philippine President Duterte with Crimes Against Humanity
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has officially filed charges against former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, accusing him of multiple counts of crimes against humanity over his brutal anti-drug campaign. The indictment covers killings that allegedly took place both during his years as mayor of Davao City and throughout his presidency between 2013 and 2018.
According to ICC prosecutors, Duterte acted as an “indirect co-perpetrator” of extrajudicial killings carried out by law enforcement officers and unidentified armed groups. The charges include 19 murders tied to his tenure as mayor, several assassinations of alleged “high-value targets” between 2016 and 2017, and at least 43 deaths linked to clearance operations targeting small-scale drug suspects from 2016 to 2018.
Duterte was arrested in Manila earlier this year and transferred to The Hague, where he is currently detained at the ICC’s facility. His defense team has raised concerns about his health, arguing that he may be unfit to stand trial due to claims of cognitive decline.
This case marks one of the most significant international justice efforts against a former head of state. Human rights advocates and families of alleged victims have hailed the move as a breakthrough in accountability, stressing that it provides long-awaited hope for justice after years of violence under Duterte’s leadership.
