Jose Mourinho Returns to Real Madrid

Jose Mourinho Real Madrid Return

Real Madrid has officially confirmed the appointment of Jose Mourinho as the club’s new head coach, marking a highly anticipated return to the Santiago Bernabéu 13 years after his initial tenure. The 63-year-old Portuguese tactician has signed a three-year contract that will keep him with the club until 2029. The appointment followed the re-election of Florentino Pérez as club president, which was considered the final hurdle in finalizing the agreement. To secure his release from Benfica, Real Madrid reportedly paid a €15 million release clause.

Mourinho is set to officially begin his duties on July 13, 2026, when the squad commences its pre-season preparations. He arrives in Madrid with a trusted coaching staff that previously served with him at Benfica, including João Tralhão as his right-hand man and fitness specialist Antonio Dias, who is tasked with implementing a high-intensity physical program. The move comes after a period of transition for the club, as Mourinho replaces outgoing manager Álvaro Arbeloa. Benfica has since appointed former Fulham manager Marco Silva as his successor.

Upon his arrival, Mourinho’s primary focus will shift toward squad planning and the upcoming summer transfer window. Real Madrid has already confirmed the signings of defender Ibrahima Konaté and right-back Denzel Dumfries, with Mourinho reportedly identifying further needs for reinforcements in midfield and the left-back position. With his return, the club aims to stabilize the squad and mount a renewed challenge for both domestic honors and a 16th European Cup, a primary objective set by the club’s leadership.
