Far-Right AfD Wins Big in Saxony-Anhalt State Vote

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party achieved a landmark victory in the Saxony-Anhalt state election on Sunday, securing a dramatic surge in voter support across the eastern region. According to initial exit polls published by public broadcasters, the anti-immigration party garnered approximately 44% of the vote.

Led by 35-year-old top candidate Ulrich Siegmund, the result represents the strongest electoral performance for a far-right party in a German regional election since World War II. Addressing supporters shortly after the polls closed, Siegmund declared that the party had successfully written history by delivering a decisive rebuke to established national political movements.

Despite the historic electoral triumph, significant uncertainty remains regarding whether the AfD will actually be able to assume control of the state government. To govern alone without partners, the party requires a clear absolute majority of seats in the regional parliament.

If final official vote tallies leave the AfD just shy of that threshold, the party faces a formidable political obstacle due to the strict “firewall” policy maintained by mainstream German political parties. Premier Sven Schulze’s center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which finished a distant second with roughly 18.5% of the vote, maintains a firm stance refusing any formal coalition or cooperation with the AfD.

The political stalemate leaves Magdeburg facing weeks of intense coalition negotiations as traditional parties explore multi-party alliances to keep the far-right out of power. The AfD’s state branch in Saxony-Anhalt remains officially classified as a confirmed right-wing extremist organization by Germany’s domestic intelligence agencies.

Meanwhile, the election results deal a heavy political blow to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, placing unprecedented pressure on his national leadership as the AfD continues to make major strategic gains across eastern Germany.
