The U.S. Department of Justice, led by Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon, has officially initiated a review of Major League Baseball’s uniform policies following a controversy involving the San Francisco Giants. On Thursday, June 18, 2026, Dhillon announced that she had referred the matter to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) for further investigation into potential religious discrimination.
The probe follows a June 12 incident in which Giants pitchers Landen Roupp, JT Brubaker, and Ryan Walker inscribed “Gen 9:12-16” on their rainbow-themed Pride Night caps. Another pitcher, Sam Hentges, opted to wear a standard team cap instead of the commemorative gear.
In response to the players’ actions, MLB issued a warning stating that any writing on uniforms violates league regulations, noting that such warnings are standard practice for any unauthorized modifications, regardless of the message. However, Dhillon challenged this stance, arguing that the league’s enforcement may unfairly burden players with religious objections.
In her referral to the EEOC, Dhillon suggested that the league’s uniform requirements might violate Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, which mandates that employers provide reasonable accommodations for employees’ religious practices. Dhillon publicly characterized the situation as “un-American,” alleging that the league has shown inconsistency by previously allowing other social messaging while threatening discipline for expressions of faith.
As the investigation begins, it highlights the ongoing tension between professional sports organizations’ uniform mandates and the legal protections surrounding individual religious expression in the workplace.
