Chad visa-free entry for African citizens
Chad is set to introduce visa-free entry for citizens of all African countries from January 1, 2027, in a move aimed at strengthening regional integration and making travel across the continent easier.
The announcement was made by Chadian authorities as the country seeks to promote greater movement of people between Chad and other African nations.
Under the planned policy, African citizens travelling to Chad will no longer be required to obtain a visa before entering the country. The measure is expected to make business trips, tourism, family visits and other forms of travel easier for people across the continent.
The decision aligns with the broader African Union push for greater freedom of movement among African countries. Removing visa barriers has long been identified as an important step toward increasing intra-African trade, tourism and economic cooperation.
For Nigerians and other West African travellers, the policy could make Chad a more accessible destination from 2027, subject to the final implementation rules and entry requirements.
The visa-free policy is also expected to support the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area, which seeks to increase economic connections between African countries by reducing barriers to cross-border commerce.
However, visa-free entry does not necessarily mean that travellers will be able to enter without meeting other immigration requirements. Travellers may still need valid passports or other approved travel documents and could be subject to standard border checks.
The planned policy represents another step toward greater freedom of movement in Africa, where citizens of many countries still face significant visa restrictions when travelling within the continent.
