Zelenskyy Fires Army Chief Syrskyi, Offers Fedorov Tech Role After Protests

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the dismissal of General Oleksandr Syrskyi as commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s armed forces, bowing to public pressure following days of mass demonstrations in Kyiv and other cities. The sweeping military leadership shakeup comes on the heels of intense political fallout sparked by last week’s ouster of popular Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, whose abrupt firing triggered widespread public backlash and rare wartime dissent.

Leadership Overhaul and New Appointments
The New Army Chief: To replace Syrskyi, President Zelenskyy appointed Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi, a commander viewed favorably by reform advocates and troops for his alignment with modern combat strategies. Drapatyi emphasized that taking the helm during the war for independence carries “absolute responsibility”.

Fedorov’s Future: Following separate meetings with Fedorov, Zelenskyy offered the ousted 35-year-old former defense and digital transformation minister a prominent government position designed to unify and spearhead the nation’s critical technology sector. While Fedorov has not yet formally confirmed acceptance of the new portfolio, he praised Drapatyi’s appointment as “new hope in the fight of free people for freedom and justice”.

Addressing the Rift: The high-stakes government restructuring follows an intractable feud between Syrskyi and Fedorov over military procurement, bureaucratic hurdles, and traditional versus tech-driven approaches to combating Russian forces.

Public Pressure and Strategic Implications
The sudden pivot marks the second major instance where President Zelenskyy has reversed course under intense street pressure, following similar anti-corruption demonstrations last summer. Protesters and junior military personnel had heavily criticized Syrskyi for maintaining an entrenched, Soviet-style command culture that critics argued resulted in unnecessary casualties.

As General Drapatyi takes over command of the armed forces, the administration faces the dual challenge of restoring internal military unity and satisfying a war-weary public demanding faster innovation, asymmetric defense capabilities, and greater transparency in military leadership.
